Lau Kung Shing (Sam Lau), a Wing Chun expert, had decided to participate in the Open Boxing Championship to be held early next month in Hong Kong organized by the "General Boxing Association".
Sam Lau, 27-year-old this year, is a Wing Chun drillmaster of several traditional Chinese martial arts classes of the Lutheran Club in Kowloon. In the Lutheran Club there are also boxing classes with Ramsey Bucks, a veteran of the boxing circle in Hong Kong, as the drillmaster. Sam Lau took the advantage of learning boxing there but had never set foot on the ring. Now a number of fellow apprentices encouraged him to participate in the Boxing Championship to be held next month, saying "don't worry about winning or losing, just display your skills".
Sam Lau told reporters that his fellow apprentices had persuaded him to participate in the Open Championship, competing with ¡§redoubtable boxers¡¨ of the heavyweight class. Domestic and foreign masters include Kim Bo, Chan Shan Gan, Ho Hei Hing and Lo Shek Keung. The son of Ramsey Bucks had also decided to joined the team.
According to Sam Lau, this is his first time for him to participate in boxing competition, so he had no ambition of winning the trophy in the championship for lack of experience. The only objective for participating in the championship is to learn lessons and test his physical strength, preparing for the "President Cup" Traditional Chinese Martial Arts Competition held in Taiwan in October.
He assisted Yip Man in teaching Wing Chun when formally apprenticed to the grandmaster in his early years; but prior to that, he first started his training in Wing Chun under the auspicious of Mui Yat and later also learnt western boxing from Ramsey Bucks when he established the Lutheran Boxing Club.
During the period of apprenticeship and learning of different martial arts, he competed and cross-practised his skills with people from different factions.
In 1974, at his own expenses, he took part in the International Chinese Martial Arts Competition in Taiwan challenging those at levels higher than himself.
